While there are a few precautions we have to take when installing a new roof in the winter, it’s very doable! The best temperature for asphalt shingles to be installed is between 40-85 degrees Fahrenheit. Asphalt shingles become brittle when temps hit below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Even the best asphalt shingles can crack when they are hammered into place. Furthermore, adhesive has a hard time sticking when the temperature falls below 40 degrees. Asphalt shingles are not the only type to be susceptible to breaking during cold temperatures. Fiberglass shingles and shakes are also prone to fracturing if they are installed in freezing temperatures. However, it is possible to place a new roof in the winter. We will need to wait until the temperature reaches the optimal range before scheduling the installation date. As an extra precaution, we store our materials in a warm warehouse before installation.
